Lifeschool 202: How to Do Church Discipline with Love and Purpose

Church discipline is a term found nowhere in the Bible. But its taught, often necessary, and it is usually very difficult to practice in ways that show the love of God. And many of us, and those we know, have been hurt by churches not doing this correctly.

This week on the Lifeschool Podcast, we discuss how to do church discipline with love and purpose… instead of just “handing people over to Satan” and being done with them. :-/

Want to stop sinning? Here’s how to get started.

Where does sin come from? Why do we still sin even after we have acknowledged something as sin, and perhaps, repented of it over and over?

I cannot believe I did that again!

My friend and author Tim Chester shared this with a group of us and it forever changed my view of sin.

“Sinful acts always have their origin in some form of unbelief–behind every sin is a lie. The root of all our behavior and emotions is the heart, what it trusts and what it treasures. People are given over to sinful desires because ‘they exchanged the truth of God for a lie.”

Lifeschool 200: Why Christianese is Not Good News

It seems that many Christians are bilingual… We speak in one normal, everyday language most of the time, but when it comes time to talk about religion, spirituality, or God, we break out our special “Christianese” language.

This week on the Lifeschool Podcast, we’ll talk about being more intentional (and careful) with the words we use when we talk about our faith. And we’ll give you a better way forward!

Transform Your Small Group to Live as Good News

It’s happening. Churches are starting to shift their small groups to more mission-focused, incarnational communities. And many people I know are forming new “missional communities” among their family and friends. That is super encouraging!

But… Here’s the Problem:

Christians have spent years listening to sermons, studying theology and doing Bible studies, yet still feel intimidated or unable to naturally express the good news of the Gospel into normal life, conversations, and circumstances. We will never experience gospel-transformation and missional movement in our families and neighborhoods unless this changes.  (more…)

Lifeschool 199: The Truth About Tithing: Is It Biblical?

Christians are taught that we should be giving 10% of everything we earn to the church. Is the practice of tithing still in effect for us today, or is it time to reconsider this practice?

This week on the Lifeschool Podcast, we’ll look at the truth about tithing. Is it biblical? Are we under-giving or over-giving if we are tithing, and how might we give in light of the gospel?

What Are the (new) Signs of a Healthy Church?

No one sets out to have or lead an unhealthy church or ministry. But we often find ourselves stuck in a loop of numbers and metrics we’ve inherited, or were imposed on us by the “higher-ups”. It would be great to have new signs of a healthy church.

The 3 Bs

For a long time now, churches have often or only measured three things I call the “3Bs”: Butts (attendance on Sunday); Building size; and Budgets. Are these the signs of a healthy church? Hmmm… I wonder how Jesus’ ministry career would measure up to these three benchmarks?
